Instructions
Put a mirror in front of you so that you can see the objects in the room. Remain attentive to the mirror and its reflections throughout the silent times in the recording.
Meditation
- Put your attention on the mirror itself.
- Rest your mind like the mirror you are looking at, unwavering while reflecting.
- Remain with your attention on the mirror.
- While looking into the mirror, rest your attention on all the objects it is reflecting.
- Rest like the mirror free of doing anything with the objects that are reflected in the mirror.
- Be like the mirror, resting free of grasping at any of the reflections.
- Rest like the mirror and its reflections, free from thinking.
- Is your mind calm and alert as you rest with the mirror and its reflections?
- Can you separate the mirror from its reflections?
- Rest the mind with the mirror, remaining free from engaging with the objects in the mirror.
- Allow the mind to simply rest.
After Meditation
- Take the mirror and change its direction.
- Do you realize the reflections have changed, but what do you notice about the mirror itself?
- Have you gained any certainty that you can’t find the mirror, but you know it exists?
- Are you able to distinguish the mirror from its reflections?
- Or do you find they are inseparable?
- Can you recognize a mind calm with the mirror and its reflections?
- Is it not amazing all the myriad of objects that have the potential to arise?
During the Day
When brushing your teeth, be with the mirror and its reflections. When walking down the street and you see a window and its reflections, stop for a few moments. Let the mind rest and recognize the mind is like the window and thoughts are like its reflections. You cannot find the mirror or the window, but you find objects being reflected. Rest the mind with the mirror and its reflections when you have the opportunity.
