Calm Abiding 9: Visualization Practice

Verse 16

The waves of subtle and coarse thoughts return to their source.
Undisturbed, the river of mind flows naturally.
Free from the contaminations of dullness and torpor,
May the still ocean of calm abiding be dependable.

Please read the instructions before beginning this meditation. At this point pause the recording while you read the instructions. Take a moment to be familiar with your chosen pure being as a visualization or a felt sense.

Instructions

Choose a deity or anyone you deem as an accomplished one in this meditation to support the release of disturbances to the mind. I am using the concept “pure being” to describe the form you have chosen. You will be visualizing yourself as this pure being. You can take different parts of the pure being and focus on that, the face, the clothes, the posture etc. No need to restrict yourself with the whole being if you are not able. If unable to visualize, connect with the essence of the pure being, a felt sense.  Example: visualize someone who emulates the good qualities that are innate within you.

Further Instructions

While visualizing yourself as a pure being, rest in the silence that is presented to you in the recording.

Meditation

  • Let your mind rest with the visualization or felt sense of your chosen pure being.
  • If you stray from the visualization, gently come back.
  • Maintain the visualization of yourself as a pure being inseparable with a calm mind.
  • Let the mind rest as a pure being.
  • Is the mind peaceful as a pure being?
  • Expand the energy of the pure being into a vast boundless space. While resting as a pure being in this vastness, reflect on the following positive qualities manifesting:  kindness…joy…compassion…equanimity.
  • Allow the visualized pure being to dissolve and rest the mind.
  • Reappear as a pure being and rest the mind.

After Meditation

  • Were you able to maintain the visualization or felt sense?
  • Did your mind appear to calm easier by visualizing yourself as a pure being?
  • Did your mind feel constricted or expanded in this type of meditation?
  • Was there a lessening of being disturbed by your thoughts or becoming sleepy?
  • Did you notice the connection with being a pure being and the positive qualities of kindness, joy, compassion and equanimity?
  • How are manifesting the qualities different in meditation?

During the Day

Stop and appear as a pure being. Become familiar with the visualization. When you find yourself in challenging situations, or you need support for calming your mind, try visualizing yourself as a pure being. Find opportunities during your day to cultivate the qualities of a pure being by being kind to others (and to self if need be), by feeling joy that comes from appreciation, compassion through truly “being” with others and equanimity, being free of judging with all that you encounter. Spend time expanding these four qualities whenever possible.
