Insight 6: Experiencing an Object

Verse 17

When one looks again and again at the mind that is not a thing to be seen,
And sees vividly for what it is the meaning of not seeing,
Doubts about the meaning of “is” and “isn’t” are erased.
Without confusion, may my own face know itself.

Instructions

Have an object ready. Rest with the object during the silent times of the recording.

Meditation

  • Rest with your chosen object.
  • If you don’t label the object, how do you experience it?
  • If you don’t think about it, how do you experience it?
  • Where does the form and shape take place?
  • Is it in the object? Does it take place in your mind?
  • Or, in between?
  • Look completely at the experience, can you tell where the experience is taking place?
  • Have you come to a place where there are no words to describe the experience?
  • If there are words, are you trying to pin down the experience of the object?
  • Rest in the experience of the object.
  • How is the object being experienced?
  • Is the object holding your attention or has something else grabbed your attention?
  • Can you find what arises as experience?
  • Look at the object, experiencing it fully.
  • Rest the mind.

After Meditation

  • This practice is to cut through labeling.
  • Have you come to know that appearances arise in experience?
  • Do you recognize that what arises in experience is not separate from what experiences?
  • Just like a dream, what arises in the dream is not separate from the mind that is dreaming.
  • You need a method that brings you into experiencing without labeling, free from holding onto what arises. What methods can you use?  For example: Do you need to relax, let everything unfold by itself? Do you need more focus, because you have become dull? If so, can you remain free of trying to do the focusing right, remaining free of being boxed in by your practice?
  • Do you find you need to combine methods?
  • Did you experience a moment where the subject that watches and the object that is watched, dissolve?
  • Have you noticed a spacious opening?

During the Day

Ask yourself, “What is experiencing this object that is appearing before me?”
Of course, we have self-reference points in order to function in life, but what is taking an object that appears and wants to label it?
What is it that causes disturbances to your mind?
Check this out when you notice disturbances that arise in your experience.
