Insight 7: Visualizing an Object

Verse 17

When one looks again and again at the mind that is not a thing to be seen,
And sees vividly for what it is the meaning of not seeing,
Doubts about the meaning of “is” and “isn’t” are erased.
Without confusion, may my own face know itself.

Instructions

Think of any object of your choice. Rest in the looking during the silent moments of the recording.

Meditation

  • Rest the mind in spaciousness.
  • Look at the mind and visualize an object.
  • Look intently at the visualized object.
  • Relax your attention and repeat, looking intently then relaxing.
  • Does the appearance of the object reflect positive or negative thoughts?
  • Do objects truly possess any positive or negative attributes?
  • When looking at the visualized object is the appearance and the mind two separate things?
  • How does the appearance come into the mind?
  • Look at the mind that is doing the looking.
  • Is there is any difference between that which is looking and the experience itself?
  • Do you see the object as insubstantial, or does it appear solid?
  • Is there a difference between the mind and the appearance or are they the same?
  • Or do you recognize them as inseparable?
  • Rest with nothing to do.

After Meditation

  • What are your conclusions?
  • The purpose here is to exhaust the exploration of mind and a visualized object or appearance and to see clearly that you cannot see it as different nor the same.
  • The mind and the image are inseparable, you cannot take one away from the other. Check this statement out.
  • Did you let the mind rest at some point freeing yourself from the exploration? Explore until you have a moment of clarity into the nature of an appearance.
  • Be aware it is inseparable from the mind.

During the Day

When an image appears in your mind, like ice cream do you find yourself reacting with desire and then you want to take an action?
Catch the image that appears, take a moment, and look at the image. Ask, “What is this?”
Become familiar with how you react to an image.
Do you react with a mind that is disturbed, a mind that desires, or a mind that is pushing something away?
Recognize this during the day.
