Developing Capacity 1: Developing Capacity to Rest the Mind

Verse 18

Look at objects and there is no object: one sees mind;
Look at mind and there is no mind: it is empty of nature;
Look at both of these and dualistic clinging subsides on its own.
May I know sheer clarity, the way mind is.

Meditation

  • Let the mind open up to the totality of space.
  • Rest free and easy.
  • Remain awake, resting free of thinking about anything.
  • Rest the mind free from labeling anything. It doesn’t matter what you are experiencing.
  • Rest in thoughts appearing.
  • Rest in thoughts moving.
  • Rest in thoughts changing.
  • Recognize the moment of experience and rest there.
  • Be open to all experience neither grasping nor pushing away.
  • Rest in recognizing the nature of the mind.
  • Be mindful of the nature of the mind.

After Meditation

  • What happened when you were asked to recognize the moment of experiencing and rest there?
  • Is there any concern with being hooked by experience?
  • Were you able to recognize the nature of the mind?

During the Day

Recognize how you react when you are hooked by experience. Do you notice a change in how thoughts vie for your attention? Familiarize with recognizing the nature of mind.
